That's also about the time a civilian employee at the Navy told me this story. The Navy was experimenting with highly centralized automation for, I believe, destroyers. They had a pilot program running on an SGI system. But some bean counter who ran NT on his home machine realized they could save $30K (or whatever it was) per computer if they went with NT. So the decision was made to switch computer platforms.
The test ship ventured forth on its exciting maiden voyage, with numerous onboard systems controlled by a machine running NT. It had to be towed back to port.
