I decided to adapt the All Your Base gag to Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. What do you think?
I decided to adapt the All Your Base gag to Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. What do you think?
The story begins with this extreme biker racing around the streets of Seattle. Suddenly, the earthquake begins, and he continues to joyride his bike like nothing is happening, while all hell breaks loose around him. He approaches the base of the Space Needle, waits, and when the base starts crumbling, he takes off on the bike IN THE DIRECTION THE SPACE NEEDLE IS FALLING! Do you really expect him to outrun it? Mind you, the shaking is still going on and and all the pavement and sidewalks are crumpled beyond recognition. Of course, windows don't shatter and bricks don't fall until he passes them safely.
Now if that doesn't tickle your funnybone, the epicenter is determined to be in ELLENSBURG! As a resident of Ellensburg, I can inform you it is a long 109 mile drive to Seattle, and is COMPLETELY on the other side of the Cascade Mountains, not to mention there are no faultlines anywhere near Ellensburg.
Then there is a second earthquake in Northern California, where a tremor cleverly follows a train along it's tracks (obviously an HO issue train set the producers got for Christmas). The ground along the tracks conveniently continues to cave in until it catches up, completely engulfs the train, and comes to a complete stop.
Later, there is this scene where a father drives his FOUR WHEEL DRIVE into loose sand. Now I can understand getting stuck, but NBC just HAD to sink his truck ENTIRELY! No, the ground is NOT wet, it is bone dry!
Then there is the Lameass collapse of the Golden Gate Bridge. Must Hollywood destroy every landmark? It's bad enough to destroy a needle that can withstand an 11.5 earthquake with an earthquake that measures a measly 7.9. Don't call me a physicist, but think the physics of the Golden Gate Bridge collapsing is just wrong.
Of course, two FEMA agents are sent out to a site to discover that toxic gases are leaking. One of them nearly dies, but the other is unphased? For crying outloud!
Then of course, there is just bad science in general. A 10.5 earthquake on the west coast would not only be felt in New York, it would probably destroy a few buildings. Also, the San Andreas Fault is just not capable of creating such a catastrophic event.
One threat posed in this film is that Los Angeles would fall into the ocean. BIG PROBLEM. Los Angeles is NOT falling into the ocean. Los Angeles is moving to the North.
By the way, this being a MOVIE, we can just see that Hollywood's solution is to use nukes.
If you aren't picky about scientific accuracy, you should watch the conclusion of 10.5 just for laughs.
I choose to pick common views from both.
In general, I am anti-abortion, especially if the woman made an informed decision to spread her legs to her mate. She made the decision, and if she gets pregnant, she is obligated to take responsibility for her actions. Abortion cheats women out of personal responsibility.
On the other hand, if a woman was forcibly raped and became pregnant as a result, I will probably look the other way. One of the pro-abortion arguements I hear is this scenario. The women is raped. As much I hate to break the news to them, most pregnancies are not resultant to a rape.
Then there is the scenario where the woman is in distress and not having an abortion would be fatal to her. As much as I hate the idea, I would put the woman's survival up higher in priority. Otherwise, if the woman consented to sex, became pregnant, and wasn't detrimental to her survival, absolutely NO abortion. She must take responsibility.
Ok, now to a liberal point. I believe that Joe American should be liberated from the evils of the RIAA and MPAA. In general, I believe there are some rights that are being eroded from us from corporation$. I believe that if a customer is screwed by a corporation, that person has every right to complain and protest.
However, liberalism tends to promote the self, which in itself has an inherent flaw. When we have 100 million liberal people running around, some are bound to stomp over the rights of others in the name of their own rights. Example you ask? How about the war on spam? Spammers believe they have First Amendment-reinforced rights to mailbomb the whole Internet. Email users however, believe they have the right to refuse access to their personal property (the Inbox, for example).
Conservatism, however, lends itself to people who believe there is a rigid set of rules that everybody must follow, and that there is one and only one leader at any given time (be it a dictator or God or Allah) that everyone must obey, even if told to jump off a bridge. Also, self-expression ist verboten. And darn it, you are GOING to read Hamlet.
My stance on school uniforms is that they suck. In fact, when my brother and his family moved to Texas, they found out the school district required uniforms. I was SO PISSED. I wanted to move down there to homeschool the kids. For crying out loud, why can't kids just wear what they like?
However, if there is one merit in school uniforms, is that it takes care of the issue of hostile and inappropriate clothing. Therefore, while I am deathly against school uniforms, I am in favor in dress code. While kids should be able to have a strong say in what they will wear to school on Friday, there should be limits on what they can wear. In addition, it gives kids exercise in decision making, which conservatives could not stand to have.
I cannot stand animal rights activists, tree huggers and environmentalists. Why should I give up living in a home just because it is made out of wood? Why should I give up my daily dosage of protein just so Bessy the cow can lance around in her private garden? I get the general impression that these activists label themselves as liberals, which is an irony, because they seem to think HUMAN rights are low on the scale of priorities. I eat every day. I am not going to go out of my way to make sure that what I eat used to be an animal. I have to live in a dwelling. I am not going to go out of my way to look for a house completely made from aluminum.
Now, I certainly don't condone the killing the animals for pleasure. I believe that it is strictly exclusive to human survival. I also think that clearcuts in the mountains just don't look attractive. I live next to a fantastic mountain range. But there are areas where trees have been cleared away. I understand the need for wood for shelter, but I think that foresters should come up with a way that lessens the aesthetic impact on forests. And contrary to tree-hugger belief, WE ARE NOT AT A NET LOSS IN TREES. But I still don't think we should obliterate a whole 50 acres of forest just for someone rich to build a hideout.
In general, I believe people should have rights, but these rights should be moderated. Too many people think they should have rights even if they tread on the rights of others.
To be continued???
I had been lurking here for a few months, and have enjoyed some of the articles.
I am currently a junior at an Untitled University, hoping to teach high school math some day.
My greatest technological weakness is being stuck with a C*mppaq. In case if you are wondering, the only reason I got a C*mppaq to begin with was because I was strapped for finances and the C*mppaq was a damn good deal.
I got the first C*mppaq (750MHz, 20GB, ME) in mid 2001. I determined that as soon as I deC*mppaqified it , I determined that it was reliable, though not perfect.
In August, I took the plunge by installing an 80GB hard drive, WinTV card, and a DVD/CDRW.
Last October, I borrowed an XP Pro disk from a dorm neighbor, formatted C: and installed it. It proved to be the best thing ever done.
Around Thanksgiving, Ma and Pa brought me a 1.5GHz (XP H*me) unit to trade with me.
This was the biggest mistake I have ever made. It had no AGP video card, so it would freeze often when I am trying to record TV programs.
My near future plans are to aquire all-new computer parts, salvage the parts that I installed into the C*mppaq, and build my first box. I intend to multiboot XP Pro, RedHat, Mandrake, and WinME.
I am already familiar with XP Pro, and I will have it as my primary OS.
I have never used Linux, so now is the time for me to investigate it and figure out what it is all about.
I want to have an emergency WinME partition as an emergency OS in case I need to backup and restore my XP Partition.
Currently, my 80GB hard drive is 75% DivX files by space allocation, so I really need to invest in a 250GB hard drive.
Once I am totally done with the C*mppaq, I am going to sell it to another neighbor who had an Acer with Win95 on it.
Your good nature will bring you unbounded happiness.
