Submission + - Google Project Loon To Service Internet To 100 Million In Indonesia

An anonymous reader writes: Google’s Project Loon program is finally ready to take off on the next phase of their mission to help deliver Internet access to about 200 million people in Indonesia that do not have access today. The Program Loon program will do this by flying clusters of balloons as high as 60,000 feet above Earth to help transmit high-speed Internet signals down to Earth at LTE speeds. Google has been working with Indonesia mobile network operators; XL Axiata, Telkomsel, and Indosat. The four have signed an agreement to begin testing Project Loon over Indonesia in 2016. Only about one third of Indonesia is connected to the Internet.

An anonymous reader writes: The Russian Government is threatening to block the social linking site Reddit across its country if they do not comply with removing a thread dedicated to growing cannabis. According to a post on VK.com, a site similar to Facebook in Russia, they have asked Reddit administrator to read their emails and their social media posts stating that they want /r/trees brought down which had posted an article about growing narcotic plants. Recently, Reddit changed its rules to allow illegal discussions on its site but they say that they would continue to block things such as copyrighted material.

An anonymous reader writes: Apple’s internal beta testers (their employee’s) are testing a new feature with Siri which would allow Siri to answer a missed call and also give her the power and ability to record and transcribe the messages that someone leaves with her. Talk about having your own personal secretary! With Apple’s new iCloud Voicemail, a user may no longer need regular voice mail anymore if they desire to go with the Siri way of handling voicemails. Will we see this in iOS 9? Nope, that’s not going to happen but we could definitely see this in iOS 10 which will be released in 2016.

The basic functionality of the headlight has not changed in 135 years, until now. Ford has announced a new advanced illumination system for your next car that should make driving at night a lot safer. The new headlight system utilizes a standard and infrared camera to detect objects such as animal, pedestrians, or cyclists near the road. The spot lighting system can simultaneously locate and track up to eight people, and large animals up to 12 meters.

An anonymous reader writes: Apple’s latest patent filings shows that the company is looking into displaying advertising based on your available bank balance. If Apple moves forward with this type of technology it would be a complete 360 on its previous direction to not monetize everything they know about it. Tim Cook has even said multiple times that companies are targeting consumers on multiple fronts and that he’s completely against using customer information in this manner and its not the kind of company he wants Apple to be.

An anonymous reader writes: According to Symantec’s latest Intelligence Report, Spam has fallen to less than 50% of all email in June – a number we haven’t seen in over a decade. Of all emails received by Symantec clients in June, junk emails only accounts for 49.7% down from 52.1% in April which shows a huge drop. Year over year, Spam has decreased as well due to internet providers doing a better job at filtering and shutting down spam bots.

An anonymous reader writes: Comcast have announced the release of its Gigabit Pro service which offers speeds up to 2 gigabits per second on the same day that its announced that its doubling the speeds of existing customers internet plans at no additional cost. The new service is only available in the Jacksonville, Florida area, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties within Florida.
