UC Santa Cruz graduate student here. UCSC was the start of the strike due to the rather high cost of living here. The strike wasn't successful because we didn't get a sufficiently good deal, and the strike was terminated early because the other UCs grew tired of the strike and voted to just accept the UC's offer to get things over with. There are allegations of misconduct on the UAW leadership's behalf that influenced the election results, and an appeal is currently being processed.

npm is by far the largest repository of javascript (specifically nodejs) packages—so much so that it's as though no alternatives exist. (I sure can't think of any.) You might as well advise an iPhone user not to install apps through the App Store or a Linux user not to use their distro's package manager. Avoiding npm isn't an option.

The issue with self-signed certificates is that anyone can generate a self-signed certificate for your domain. :^)

CAs provide a reasonable amount of trust that a certificate is from the actual owner of the website.
