UC Santa Cruz graduate student here. UCSC was the start of the strike due to the rather high cost of living here. npm is by far the largest repository of javascript (specifically nodejs) packages—so much so that it's as though no alternatives exist. (I sure can't think of any.) You might as well advise an iPhone user not to install apps through the App Store or a Linux user not to use their distro's package manager. Avoiding npm isn't an option.
