IBM's Plans For the Cell Processor 124

angry tapir writes "Development around the original Cell processor hasn't stalled, and IBM will continue to develop chips and supply hardware for future gaming consoles, a company executive said. IBM is working with gaming machine vendors including Nintendo and Sony, said Jai Menon, CTO of IBM's Systems and Technology Group, during an interview Thursday. 'We want to stay in the business, we intend to stay in the business,' he said. IBM confirmed in a statement that it continues to manufacture the Cell processor for use by Sony in its PlayStation 3. IBM also will continue to invest in Cell as part of its hybrid and multicore chip strategy, Menon said."

interesting except you never know that a black hat hacker has not been exploiting this for 9 years and not sharing his exploits, bugs should be disclosed very soon because you never know how long someones been using said undisclosed exploit. if you find a bug don't you think others find it too. at the same time some company's release said products with that bug and just might have known about it when it was released and didn't want to address said issues.
anyway theres no point for software to ever be perfect if a company wants you to buy a new version. how many patches have been re-patched because they added new problems. anyway these are some of the main problems with closed source software.

Websites That Don't Need to Be Made Anymore 161

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but there is a finite number of social networking or selling websites that the world needs. Here is a collection of the eight kinds of websites that absolutely don't need to be made anymore. I'd add dating sites and anybody who uses pop-up ads myself, but I think that would eliminate half the Web.

How To Play HD Video On a Netbook 205

Barence writes with some news to interest those with netbooks running Windows: "Netbooks aren't famed for their high-definition video playing prowess, but if you've got about $10 and a few minutes going spare, there is a way to enjoy high-definition trailers and videos on your Atom-powered portable. You need three things: a copy of Media Player Classic Home Cinema, CoreCodec's CoreAVC codec, and some HD videos encoded in AVC or h.264 formats. This blog takes you through the process."

Actual it sounds like if anything hurts microsoft its microsoft.
linux has found an area to be installed in netbooks but microsoft reactions is to give away products like window xp on said devices to prevent linux.

this is one example but from alot of sources microsoft has been discounting windows when faced with linux instead of competing in a healthy way.

so giving windows away to stop product ABC from happening is hurting them .... this is good there making the decisions (this could also be viewed as anti-competitive and abuse of monopoly power yet again too) eventually they will not be able to give away said products (linux is not going away and it keeps growing and changing faster)

also note office is there cash cow, well instead attacking why not make office for this new platform and compete (also the interesting thing is if they ported office to linux it would help lock in there formats and they could charge more for it and people that use it would buy it)
