I can not agree with with you more. I've shared (and still share) student housing with people training to be secondary school teachers. One of them is genuinely smart and would be a great teacher. However I've meet people who are becoming teachers because they think it will be easy and after a five minute conversion with them have been left with the feeling that they struggle to get dresses in the morning by themselves.

More money to teachers and dissuading lazy people to become teachers is clearly the best option regardless of the subject or area of teaching that they are entering.

Sony Hit With $1M Penalty For COPPA Violations 85

coondoggie writes "It really isn't a big enough penalty, and the company admitted no guilt, but Sony BMG Music Entertainment today agreed to pay $1 million as part of a settlement to resolve Federal Trade Commission charges that it knowingly violated the privacy rights of over 30,000 underage children. Specifically the FTC said the company violated the agency's Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the FTC did say the penalty was its largest ever in a COPPA case. To provide resources to parents and their children about children's privacy in general, and social networking sites in particular, the penalty order requires Sony Music to link to certain FTC consumer education materials for the next five years."

I'm still at uni and have shared houses with people training to be teachers, on a specific degree course, and have spent a fair amount of time socialising which other people on their course. Most the trainee teachers lack the ability to state opinion as that, opinions. And will argue even a point to the end if they think its correct even if suitable evidence suggest otherwise. I know this is not true for all teachers but from the trainee teachers I have met a saying springs to mind, those who can't teach (and those who can't teach, teach PE)
