you were right to point out that wind energy is not a good candidate to supply electrical energy for base load due to the unpredictable squalls. to overcome this, several schemes involving pumped-storage hydroelectricity have been used in many parts of the world to manage this load balancing.
in the case of harnessing of wind energy, the alternative method would be to use this wind energy to top up the high elevation reservoir and drain this energy to supply the grid.
