"Fixing" this problem means creating a sure-fire way to prevent illegal immigrants from working in the country, so nothing is done about it. One party doesn't want to fix it because they want to make these people citizens so they'll vote for that party. An influential fraction of the other party doesn't want to fix it because they want these people to remain as a source of cheap labor.

Semi-OT, but I just want to throw out my favorite low-cost, low-effort fix for getting nearly all illegal immigrants out of the country. There are two steps:

1. Make it a criminal offense to hire a worker not vetted as legally able to work by the E-Verify system, and beef up the E-Verify system so it validates with roughly the same level of assurance as the US Passport issuance system. By "criminal offense" I mean "non-trivial mandatory jail time for the most senior company officer who approved/ordered the hire".

Please point to the Article:Clause in the Constitution that delegates the Federal Government (or State Government) the power to control who can work for who in this country. I won't hold my breath. This infuriates me no end. The government has NO BUSINESS telling me who I can and cannot work for, and that is precisely what E-Verify is, whether it is used for that purpose TODAY or not. But if nits like you get their way, it won't be long before you get turned down for a job for any number of reasons: outstanding parking ticket? No job for you.

Get your facts straight. They only maintained lists of members of the *organized* militia. No list was maintained of the unorganized militia, mainly because by law it meant (and still means to THIS DAY) 'every able-bodied man of at least 17 and under 45 years of age who are not members of the National Guard or Naval Militia..."

Ummm... just because its on wikipedia doesn't make it true. the fact is, there is absolutely n law requiring a native born American Citizen to obtain and or use a SSN to live and/or work in this country. That said, it is true that TPTB have done a remarkable job convincing everyone that there is, and most employers are too terrified of the IRS to stand up to this BS.

Actually, they only removed it from the GUI... you can still specify this via the command line, so I just created a shortuct to the installer with the switches specified. I yelled and screamed about this, then actually read the README that comes with Openoffice.org and discovered this. From the README:

"Registration of OpenOffice.org as default application for Microsoft Office formats can be forced or suppressed by using the following command line switches with the installer:
* /msoreg=1 will force registration of OpenOffice.org as default application for Microsoft Office formats.
* /msoreg=0 will suppress registration of OpenOffice.org as default application for Microsoft Office formats."

You might be interested in my Feature Request for a proper 'File Associations Manager' though - I really, really don't understand the resistance to this idea: http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=77257
