Journal leviramsey's Journal: Week 6 Picks 11

After a 9-5 Week 5 (straight-up... 8-5-1 against the spread), I am first out of the gate with predictions on the upcoming week of competition.

  • Atlanta @ NY Giants: NYG by 7
  • Baltimore @ Indianapolis: IND by 9
  • Buffalo @ Houston: BUF by 1
  • Carolina @ Dallas: CAR by 5
  • Cleveland @ Tampa Bay: TB by 13
  • Detroit @ Minnesota: DET by 3
  • Green Bay @ New England: NE by 3
  • New Orleans @ Washington: NO by 4
  • Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati: PIT by 6*
  • Jacksonville @ Tennessee: JCK by 15
  • Kansas City @ San Diego: SD by 6
  • Oakland @ St. Louis: OAK by 22**
  • Miami @ Denver: DEN by 1
  • San Francisco @ Seattle: SF by 8

* That's my brain talking... in my heart I have the feeling that the Bengals, led by their rightful starter, will eke out a victory, as they are wont to do against the Steelers.

** Maybe the Rams will break out, but I only see one offense getting in gear, and they're wearing Silver and Black.

Top 13 Teams

  • Oakland
  • Miami
    Jacksonville
  • San Diego
  • New Orleans
    Denver
    Tampa Bay
  • Indianapolis
    San Francisco
  • Green Bay
    New England
    Philadelphia
    Kansas City

Bottom 6 teams (in order of suckitude)

  • Cincinnati [maybe things are turning around... best I can say right now is that I'd consider picking them at home against the Vikes or Rams]
  • St. Louis [this bottom list is reverting to mid-90s form...]
  • Minnesota [never mind...]
  • NY Jets
  • Tennessee
  • Houston

TIDBIT: The Redskins and Ravens are tied for 16th in my power ratings...

  • A billion dollars of state money in stadiums and road 'improvements' and the best we get is both teams in a tie for 16th place? Remember when $1 billion meant something? Maybe we'll get really lucky, and be able to host the Olympics in the area. (Of course, we could already be out of the running, it's been months since I've heard anything.)

    • Wasn't FedEx built largely by Jack Kent Cooke (with the aforementioned road improvements)?

Or are you just talking about the Ravens' stadium?

Interesting tidbit: I've been on the field at FedEx... in summer '01, I went down to the DC area with my father (I was the tech support). We were staying with an old friend of his who lived a couple of miles from the stadium. My dad's been a 'Skins fan for years so we decided to pay the new facility a visit. We walk through a loading dock and get stopped by the security guard. After explaining that we've driven from Massachusetts and are die-hard 'Skins fans, he allows us to actually walk onto the field for a few minutes.

I'm waiting for Patrick Ramsey jerseys to go on sale at the Redskins online store... I'm thinking that it might make a very nice gift for dear-ol' dad.

      • Between the road 'improvements' for the Skins stadium, the Ravens stadium, and the O's stadium, the state of Maryland has spent over one billion dollars. The stadium was built by Cooke, but the State of Maryland shelled out for the infrastructure. Changed/added ramps from the DC beltway, built MASSIVE 6 lane road into the complex, etc. It did cost less than the monstrosities in Baltimore, but only building the roads provided less of a bargain than you'd expect.

        • Of course, the infrastructure is more justifiable: after all, governments will (rightly or wrongly) do just that for office or retail developments. At least limiting oneself to doing the roads is providing something of benefit to more people, especially since the football traffic doesn't affect commuters and so forth.

Still, Maryland is a bitch that sports teams know they can slap around, thanks to Mr. Irsay (whose son is now talking about leaving Indianapolis and moving to the Chicago suburbs).

Of course, Massachusetts has a history of opposing public money for stadiums. A little bit of federal and state money went into building the FleetCenter, but that was because North Station and the Garden would have to be demolished for the Big Dig (North Station being an Amtrak, subway, and commuter rail station, on top of which the Garden and then the Fleet Center were built. Gillette was built with private money on the grounds of the old Foxboro, with some minor road improvements (the access road was widened from 2 to 4 lanes) and they paid for the sewer hookups.

    • I heard we were already out of the running. Can't remember where I heard that, and can't find anything...
    • I paid city taxes for Paul Brown stadium, so I don't wanna hear it.
  • If you are betting and want a true upset, I'd pick Cincinnati over Pittsburgh. I'll never do it, being the die-hard fan that I am, but I know how difficult it is to go 0-6. And Cincinnati always loves playing spoiler against the steelers. Its just a tough game.

Also, you underestimate Buffalo. I think 1 point is being a bit too conservative. They can really put points on the board.
I think Buffalo is the most underrated team this year.
