journalling is there to help provide a safe guard against data loss and corruption. using HFS+ without the journal can be risky - I have experienced problems personally from this - any freeze up, reboot without proper unmounting of the drive, etc and you are in trouble. While I haven't tried NTFS is seems to be the most compatible between OS's, meets your requirements for file size of 80 GB's:

Journal Journal: Mandrake 9.1

Today I installed MAndrake 9.1, completely overwriting the old 8.1 version I had on there. I had some problems in the beginning from an outdated BIOS but I updated it and the install went ahead. Another problem was that since I also have a partition with Windows XP on it and had stupidly formatted a second hard drive from Windows rather than DOS. This made it unrecognizable and made the Linux installation take a long time to continue since it couldn't do a proper check on the drive. I restart
