In the past, when a new version of Windows came out, there was no real need to phase out the old Windows - people wanted the newest version when they bought a new PC.
Windows 2000 vs Windows XP was quite same move. Many ppl doesnt want upgrade or change OS, so Microsoft stop official update old version. As i good remember that was main reason why they did this.
