Students Are Always Half Right In Pittsburgh 881

Pittsburgh Public Schools officials have enacted a policy that sets 50 percent as the minimum score a student can receive for assignments, tests and other work. District spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said, the 50 percent minimum gives children a chance to catch up and a reason to keep trying. If a student gets a 20 percent in a class for the first marking period, he or she would need a 100 percent during the second marking period just to squeak through the semester. The district and teachers union issued a joint memo to ensure staff members' compliance with the policy, which was already on the books but enforced only at some schools. At this rate, it won't be long before schools institute double extra credit Mondays and Fridays to ensure students don't take three day weekends.

I purchased an HDTV about 6 months ago, and have not subscribed to receive any HD broadcasting, or purchased an HD PVR or receiver.

The *instant* Apple begins selling pay-per-season subscriptions to HD quality programming, I'll be purchasing whatever equipment from Apple required to play the shows I want to watch (Battlestar Galactica, The Unit, House, and a few others). I think that Steve Jobs is the only person in the industry who seems to have a clue, and is trying hard to deliver what people want -- and I intend to reward him for that.

If broadcasters haven't figured out that there is a market of people that are willing to pay them -- directly -- whatever amount that the advertisers are currently paying them to deliver my personal household's advertising impressions (a few $ per season per program, I would guess), then they are not paying attention to their marketplace, and deserve to get blind-sided by Steve Jobs, Disney, or whoever else gets a clue first.

Microsoft to Give Away Software 197

dptalia writes "In an attempt to suck up to the European Union, Microsoft has announced that it will give away software allowing multiple operating systems to run simultaneously. Microsoft says this is part of their strategy to make more software available through OSS." From the article: "Georg Greve, president of the Free Software Foundation Europe, said he had not seen the details of Microsoft's giveaway but cautioned against assuming it was motivated only by pragmatism or a new spirit of cooperation. 'If Microsoft were doing this for altruistic reasons, it would be a first,' Greve said. 'I think they are probably trying to get more machines on the Windows platform, and they may also be trying to improve relations in Brussels.'"

Vista to Create 50,000 Jobs in Europe 270

prostoalex writes "A Microsoft-sponsored study found that Vista will be a boon to European economy, as it 'will create more than 50,000 technology jobs in six large European countries and will lead to a flood of economic benefits for companies there,' News.com reports. Europe will see a total of 1.2 mln paychecks thanks to the new operating system: 'In the six countries studied, more than 150,000 IT companies will produce, sell or distribute products or services running on Windows Vista in 2007 and will employ 400,000 people, IDC said. Another 650,000 will be employed in the IT departments of businesses that rely on Vista.'"
