When VMware Performance Fails, Try BSD Jails 361

Siker writes in to tell us about the experience of email transfer service YippieMove, which ditched VMware and switched to FreeBSD jails. "We doubled the amount of memory per server, we quadrupled SQLite's internal buffers, we turned off SQLite auto-vacuuming, we turned off synchronization, we added more database indexes. We were confused. Certainly we had expected a performance difference between running our software in a VM compared to running on the metal, but that it could be as much as 10X was a wake-up call."

College Police Think Using Linux Is Suspicious Behavior 1079

FutureDomain writes "The Boston College Campus Police have seized the electronics of a computer science student for allegedly sending an email outing another student. The probable cause? The search warrant application states that he is 'a computer science major' and he uses 'two different operating systems for hiding his illegal activity. One is the regular B.C. operating system and the other is a black screen with white font which he uses prompt commands on.' The EFF is currently representing him."

Comment Would most nerds really vote for Obama? (Score 1) 950

One thing that is overlooked, is that in the tech and engineering fields, Libertarianism is far more visible than in other demographics. Those folks tend to think Obama and other Dems are socialists and would sooner vote for imperialistic war mongers than someone who the feel will take their money and give it to welfare cases who refuse to work. Mobilizing that demographic will probably (speculation) have more of an adverse effect on Obama's chances than increasing it.
