Our dating system supposedly begins at the birth of Jesus... so when you are celebrating your 2000th birthday, you have COMPLETED 2000 years of life.
A mathematician would know nothing of the historical facts (that they started counting at 1 and not 0 etc.), so I think he is the one that would definitely be pro-2000-millennium.
