Digital photos might do the trick. In extreme cases you can stitch them digitally.

Potential problems are
Glare - Use polarized filters ( May not need them in most cases )
Uneven lighting - Use reflectors ( A simple white paper or cloth will do the trick. You can correct them digitally as well.
Camera shake - Use camera timer
Distortion - Use some background ( paper or a drawing board ) and draw a square on it, place the map, include square in the photo and use it to correct the distortion..
Color shift - Use gray card and color correct...
Use lowest ISO if possible.
