The whole four year thing is speculation by anonymous posters, while there are quite a few players that have posted checkable facts regarding market activity that makes it seem like only matter of a week or whenever alchemy went in.

Unfortunately it seems that in situations like these developers can tear their hair out trying to think of a way around every possibility of cheating but that somehow those select few who believe that everything should be given to them on a plate and that there is noting wrong with throwing money at any problem will find a way through.
