That may be true in Cali, where the sun always shines, and hot women program computers. In NY, in the wide world of financial software development, Perl is grandfathered into everything.

Software is rolled out nightly, and millions of dollars run through these scripts daily. As long as what's in the system is supported by Perl, and as long as it's "stable enough", it will remain around.

Transitioning one of the large financial companies to Perl would be a monumental task, risking massive quantities of money.
