Comment Re:No Teaching Experience? (Score 4, Interesting) 64

Many of my students who have volunteered with TEALS said that they felt that it wasn't doing much or anything to build long term capacity with respect to teaching.

That said, they all felt that while they were in the classroom the kids were getting something that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise and that was worth it.

They didn't think it was a game changer but they did feel it was a good thing. I tend to agree.

Funny thing is that I've been told that my graduates form the largest subset of all the NY area TEALS volunteers.

Meanwhile we continue to produce results but struggle to raise funds while the rich get richer.

Oh well, back to the grind.

I made no reference to H1-B no about Gates making money - try reading what I wrote.

In terms of programs - I'm a teacher so I have neither a voice nor deep pockets. What I do have is the fact that I'm the best at what I do and have built a great team. As the U.S. wrecks its overall ed system and rolls out bad CS the kids that I work with will be in even higher demand.

What would be more interesting : Compare what percentage of women vs men that took cs50 decide to take the next class. Then compare what percentage of women and men drop the next class. - I have a feeling these sugary overview classes do little to encourage people to pursue real computer science in the long run because the support structure is not in place at the higher level. - If I am wrong, and the later classes have changed to encourage people to stay interested that would be a really big step in the right direction.

First Cases of Flesh-Eating Drug Emerge In the United States 618

Hugh Pickens DOT Com writes "Having spent the last decade wreaking havoc in Russia, a flesh-eating drug called Krokodil has arrived in Arizona, reports Eliza Gray at Time Magazine. The Banner Poison Control Center has reported the first two users of the drug which makes user's skin scaly and green before it rots away [Warning: Graphic Images]. Made of codeine, a painkiller often used in cough syrup, and a mix of other materials including gasoline, paint thinner, and alcohol, Krokodil become popular in Russia because it costs 20 times less than heroin and can be made easily at home. Also known as Desomorphine, Krokodil has sedative and analgesic effects, and is around 8-10 times more potent than morphine. When the drug is injected, it rots the skin by rupturing blood vessels, causing the tissue to die. As a result, the skin hardens and rots, sometimes even falling off to expose the bone. 'These people are the ultimate in self-destructive drug addiction,' says Dr. Ellen Marmur. 'Once you are an addict at this level, any rational thinking doesn't apply.' The average life span of a Krokodil user is two to three years, according to a 2011 TIME investigation of the drug's prevalence in Russia."
