The issue is not using water for a factory, it's diverting the water outside of the Lake Michigan watershed. The solution, to me at least, is easy; put the factory closer to the lake, so water stays within the lake's watershed.

The bigger issue is the money being wasted and philosophy of wrecking the planet; If you want to take advantage of Great Lakes water, come to the Great Lakes; don't divert it elsewhere. We can look at dry lakebeds in Russia and other places where massive diversions basically make the land uninhabitable. There's plenty of empty factory space in Milwaukee and along the shore that could be used by FoxConn.

It would be interesting to know what would happen if a similar deployment of autonomous drones was pointed toward a high-security building such as the Pentagon, White House or congress. If they're autonomous, would some sort of jamming signal cause the drones to hover or retreat/drop? Probably only a matter of time before some idiot tries it...

Comment Obligatory Bono / U2 reference (Score 1) 292

Since this is a story regarding Ireland, there is a legal obligation that Bono and/or U2 have to be mentioned at least once, especially since they used to be business partners. Remember the U2 special edition iPod? U2, reared in Ireland, have (has?) been roundly criticized by the Irish press/public for moving a lot of their business holdings out of Ireland (I believe to the Netherlands) to reduce their tax burden. They are made out in the press to be ungrateful tax dodgers/cheats. They are, it seems, working the loopholes like everyone else that can hire top-notch corporate tax accountants. Ireland has its financial troubles like a lot of countries, but a lot of the "Celtic Tiger" growth during the pre-2008 bust as due to these special tax laws. What goes around, comes around.
