Comment Is this just a paranoia phase? (Score 1) 382

I really dont see whats the big deal in terms of ID.In Malaysia and Singapore,there have been ID cards since the 40's and people have not riled up against it.No,we have not complained about it and no we have not thrown a tantrum about it.Is it just a US and time phase of paranoia or is there anything to be genuinely concerned about?

Doom con runs away writes: "MIT biochemists have identified a molecular mechanism behind fear, and successfully cured it in mice, according to an article in the journal Nature Neuroscience. They did this by inhibiting a kinase, an enzyme that change proteins, called Cdk5, which facilitates the extinction of fear learned in a particular context."

The breakdown products (oxons) of the three most commonly used organophosphorus pesticides in California's agricultural Central Valley -- chlorpyrifos, malathion and diazinon -- are 10 - 100 times more toxic to amphibians than their parent compounds, which are already highly toxic to amphibians, according to recent experiments.

christian.einfeldt writes: "The Venezuelan Government announced the roll-out of four different models of Linux-powered consumer computers, consisting of three desktop models and one notebook model. Brand-named "Bolivarian Computers", these computers will be will be produced by a joint venture of a Chinese company named Lang Chao and the Venezuelan Ministry of Light Industry and Commerce. The goal of the project is to jump start a domestic IT industry and become an IT exporter. According to Chris Carlson of Venezuelanalysis.com,

'Until now Venezuela has always imported computers both from well-known brands and generic brands from the developed world. With this new venture the Venezuelan government hopes to diversify national production, integrate national productive chains, and work towards technological independence for the country.'
The computers will first be assembled in Venezula out of Chinese-built parts, but the joint venture plans on substituting domestic-made parts by the end of the year."

From the article: 'The L4 Microkernel works with its own open source operating system Iguana, which is specifically designed as a base for use in embedded systems.'" Specific performance results are also available from the NICTA website.

Illumio to Launch Social Network Advice Software 132

hdtv writes "The New York Times is reporting that Palo Alto-based Illumio will soon try to figure out the experts among your social network with a new online service." From the article: "Illumio is not a search engine, like Google or Yahoo. The system works by transparently distributing a request for information on questions like "Who knows John Smith?" and "Are Nikon digital cameras better than Olympus?" to the computers in a network of users. The questions can then be answered locally based on a novel reverse auction system that Illumio uses to determine who the experts are."
