In many of the large, sophisticated cars of the type TFA article is describing, holding the Engine Start/Stop button for several seconds while in gear will shut the engine down. This should allow the emergency brake to slow the car sufficiently to bring it to a stop while keeping power going to the power steering so you can still control the vehicle.

If the servers that run Siri get turned off, I imagine what will happen will be exactly like what happened to the carphone in my 2002 Mercedes. It's not a cellphone, so it's no longer supported. Didn't serve me any purpose so I got rid of the box. The keypad is just for changing radio stations and CDs now.

Not that surprising really. As old technologies fade, most people move on, but many are left in the void.

Nor was it a pity plea; they don't want your derision.

They wanted a solution to their problem. That's why they're asking /. how to deal with the situation. If someone asks you for help fixing their car, you don't launch into a rant about the engineer's design and material choices and how they know better. Hopefully, you go about helping them fix the problem.

There's no point in having Ask Slashdot if the replies are all posts telling the asker they're meddling, they're stupid, they're lazy, they don't understand. You aren't obligated to respond to the questions. If you don't have a solution, don't say anything and avoid being an unhelpful dick.

One of the best teachers I ever had called a student a dumbass once, as a joke. I like to think that I came out alright, nobody took it seriously. The country didn't devolve into horrible uncivilized masses, the Earth didn't fall into the sun, the universe didn't implode. It's not like students don't here a lot worse things at lunch anyway. Who are we really protecting, and to what extent? To the extent that it requires legislation? I think not.
