... and far fewer hours of assisted toying.
Since the first consumer computers weren't available (and affordable) until I was in my 20s, it was no great detriment. It's true I've spent countless hours at my HW/OS hobby *maintaining* my skills, but it was good ol' book learnin' that provided the depth and breadth of knowledge, and the bootstrap into a paying job.

Which may explain the why there's a higher incidence of autism in children of engineers (http://www.autismresearchcentre.com/docs/papers/1997_BCetal_Engineer.pdf). Evolution is at work developing a mind for the next eon.

Use RTSP to stream and StreamTorrent for distribution.
There are RTSP implementations to fit most any budget and need. Even something as basic as Videolan could work, depending on how much effort want to contribute on your own (or delegate).
Using a StreamTorrent network might help with load balancing, especially if audience size exceeds capacity.
But it really comes down to network capacity, audience size, desired content quality, and how much you want/need to 'protect' that content.

PlayOn Streams mpeg2 across your LAN to UPnP clients. I've tested streaming to Linux with djmount and XBMC with mixed results. There's a bit of coding left to make either viable.

It's an ARC (tm) "Ambient Radiation Crockpot".
Move over George Foreman, this new slow cooker makes chili and stew like your grill never could. Just put in the ingredients, place it in an open, south-facing window and let the communication satellites do the rest. "But what will I do for 4-8 hours?" you ask? Just connect your your satellite TV tuner to the coaxial output and enjoy hours of digital media.

If you're not comfortable charging for distribution, you can always open some e-currency account and accept donations. If your concerned about profiting from the work of others, contribute those profits to organizations that support and defend F/OSS.
