PERL is finding its way into many new places like silicon chip design. It is a standard practice to use PERL in verification, verilog build and timing scripts. These designs are real world, complex operation where you need a powerful language to get things done. It is a language that works well and one that you learn on the job and not hyped in school. Imagine how much more popular it would be if there were classes in PERL that could prepare students to learn what they will do on the job instead of learning it when you get here.
