Unfortunately, a lot of the alternatives are like, "let's make something new, that's going to suck for the near future until we get the kinks worked out." Sure, they'll eventually become something great but for the present they're not really appropriate for a major project like KDE.

Well, I can't speak to the maturity of the others, but Vesta is the result of over a decade of R&D and has been in production use for microprocessor design projects at Compaq and Intel for over 6 years. Vesta's period of "trying something new" happened a long time ago, and the kinks have been worked out for years.

That's not to suggest that it's static (Intel employs two full-time software engineers to work on it), but it's been stable for a long time.
