This may be a band-aid on an open wound but it's better to avoid being wounded in the first place.

50 % reduction in mortality is not a "band-aid". It's medication, and a good one.

Comment Sample lyrics are awfully close to "All Apologies" (Score 3, Insightful) 88

"All Apologies", while not Nirvana's biggest hit on the charts, has over time become one of their best-known songs, and was the last song on their final album. It contains the lyric "In the sun, I feel as one".

An extrapolation from this to "I don't care/I feel as one, drowned in the sun," seems pretty uncreative. A lyricist would probably avoid such obviously similar lyrics to avoid the perception of re-writing the same song. As such, at least the lyrics seem like a pretty unimpressive effort.

This is a stage in the ongoing re-ordering of international tax norms after the deterioration of what has been called a “century-old, mostly European gentlemen’s agreement”. But it is not the case that nothing has been done about it, as with the OECD BEPS project operationalizing "meaningful changes in the participants, agenda, institutions, norms, and legal instruments of international tax." as described and argued in this paper:

If this research raises concern that outsourced training of AIs may include back doors, a committee of separately trained AIs that "vote" on identifying things ought to address this threat, unless somehow the same backdoor is inserted into all committee members' training, which could be guarded against.

This would also help to identify any such back doors, which could be found in an investigation whenever a particular vote is not unanimous.

Comment Re:Image recognition was never secure (Score 1) 64

Image recognition will be an important component of allowing autonomous robotic systems to function correctly. Robots will be more useful if they can recognize some thing by how they look, rather than requiring us to tag everything of interest in the real world with some secure system of correct identification. So anything that subverts image recognition raises a concern for safe and correct operation, rather than more typical computer security concerns, such as improper access control or authorization.

So why would anyone want to attack the safe and correct function of autonomous robots?

A malicious person might want to poison the training set to embarrass or hurt Google (or any other competitor making autonomous robots), more than in an effort to hurt a particular person, get around security, or damage a particular thing.

Chemistry Tasks For the Computer Lab? 154

soupman55 writes "I teach Chemistry to students completing their last two years of high school. Basically it's a 'teach and test' course with a few experiments thrown in. I want to jazz up the course using computer and internet resources. For instance, I could set some tasks that require Excel spreadsheet calculations. Or I could set some web quests where students search for information online. One of the decisions to be made is: Do I use computer/internet tasks to help the students grasp the material that is already in the course, or do I help them become aware of ideas that are extensions to their course? Also, when I compare Chemistry classes with Accounting classes, it strikes me that unlike Accounting where learning to use software like Quick Books is an integral part of the course, that there is no particular software that a chemistry student must learn to use. Or is there? What in terms of chemistry and computers worked for you? Or what is there computer-wise that wasn't in your high school chemistry course but should have been?"

Dinosaur Feather Color Discovered 219

anzha writes "Do you remember being a kid and told we'd never know what colors the dinosaurs were? For at least some, that's no longer true. Scientists working in the UK and China have closely examined the fossils of multiple theropods and actually found the colors and patterns that were present in the fossilized proto-feathers. So far, the answer is orange, black and white in banded and other patterns. The work also thoroughly thrashes the idea that fossils might not be feathers, but collagen fibers instead. If this holds up, Birds Are Dinosaurs. Period. And colorful!"

Political Affiliation Can Be Differentiated By Appearance 262

quaith writes "It's not the way they dress, but the appearance of their face. A study published in PLoS One by Nicholas O. Rule and Nalini Ambady of Tufts University used closely cropped greyscale photos of people's faces, standardized for size. Undergrads were asked to categorize each person as either a Democrat or Republican. In the first study, students were able to differentiate Republican from Democrat senate candidates. In the second, students were able to differentiate the political affiliation of other college students. Accuracy in both studies was about 60% — not perfect, but way better than chance."

Police Called Over 11-Year-Old's Science Project 687

garg0yle writes "Police in San Diego were called to investigate an 11-year-old's science project, consisting of 'a motion detector made out of an empty Gatorade bottle and some electronics,' after the vice-principal came to the conclusion that it was a bomb. Charges aren't being laid against the youth, but it's being recommended that he and his family 'get counseling.' Apparently, the student violated school policies — I'm assuming these are policies against having any kind of independent thought?"

Own Your Own Fighter Jet 222

gimmebeer writes "The Russian Sukhoi SU-27 has a top speed of Mach 1.8 (more than 1,300 mph) and has a thrust to weight ratio greater than 1 to 1. That means it can accelerate while climbing straight up. It was designed to fight against the best the US had to offer, and now it can be yours for the price of a mediocre used business jet."
