Submission + - Supreme Court Refuses to Hear EPIC Challenge to NSA Surveillance 1

Trailrunner7 writes: The challenge to the NSA’s domestic surveillance program filed with the Supreme Court by the Electronic Privacy Information Center ended Monday, with the court refusing to consider the challenge at all. EPIC had filed the challenge directly with the Supreme Court rather than going through the lower courts.

EPIC, a non-profit organization involved in privacy policy matters, had asked the court to vacate an order from a judge in the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Court that had enabled the NSA’s collection of hundreds of millions of Verizon call records under the so-called metadata collection program. The challenge hinged on the idea that the FISC had gone outside of its authority in granting the order.

Indian Military Hopes to Weaponize the Searing "Ghost Pepper" 267

coondoggie writes "The military in India is looking to weaponize the world's hottest chili, the bhut jolokia or 'ghost pepper,' according to a number of news outlets. The Bhut Jolokia chili pepper from Assam, India is no ordinary pepper. In tests first conducted by the New Mexico State University in 2008 and subsequently confirmed by Guinness World records and others, the Bhut Jolokia reached over one million Scoville heat units, while the next hottest, the Red Savina Habenero, clocks in at a mere 577,000. Scoville units are a universally accepted measure of chili hotness."

I don't know much about the problem but I do know that a buddy of mine who works as an installer supervisor for Comcast in Minneapolis said that his company is very actively trying to take out the attempted city-wide WiFi in Minneapolis. It's simple dollars for them. (Almost) No one needs landline phone service any more. Lots of people like cable TV (and in Minneapolis there's not much else for choice) but I feel that there's a growing segment of the population that feels they need TV less than they need internet. How many customers (and dollars) would Comcast lose if people could get "free" and easy to access internet from elsewhere?
