You are completely right. There has been a lot of hype around data science over the past ~5 years. Companies have rushed to try to harness the power of data without knowing what is means. Their answer has usually been let's hire data scientists and they will figure it out.
The truth is a lot of companies that are attempting to do that don't have the foundations to make proper data science happen. Be it from a data perspective, infrastructure or organization perspective. There are a lot of building pieces needed to make data science profitable, and the answer is usually not to start with data science, but rather to bring a culture of being data-driven (analysis style) and of automation.
Some companies are able to get a lot of value out of data science activities, but these tend to be companies with a high engineering focus and leveraging data in some other shape and forms for quite some time now.
