Submission + - Bitcoin: Making Online Gambling Legal in the U.S.? (businessweek.com) 1

SomePgmr writes: "Michael Hajduk had sunk one year and about $20,000 into developing his online poker site, Infiniti Poker, when the U.S. online gambling market imploded. On April 15, 2011, a day now known in the industry as Black Friday, the U.S. Department of Justice shut down the three biggest poker sites accessible to players in the U.S., indicting 11 people on charges of bank fraud, money laundering, and illegal gambling.

Hajduk, though, was barely fazed. Calgary-based Infiniti Poker, like several other new online gambling sites, plans to accept Bitcoin when it launches later this month. The online currency may allow American gamblers to avoid running afoul of complex U.S. laws that prevent businesses from knowingly accepting money transfers for Internet gambling purposes. “Because we’re using Bitcoin, we’re not using U.S. banks—it’s all peer-to-peer,” Hajduk says. “I don’t believe we’ll be doing anything wrong.”"

Considering that there are effectively 100 Million parts to 1 Bitcoin it doesn't take an economist to explain that you can divide up 21 Million Bitcoins amongst a mere 7 Billion people just fine.
You can hold a wallet with a balance as small as 0.00000001 BTC (known as a 'Satoshi')
There are at most 21 Million Bitcoins, but that's 2100 *Trillion* satoshis.
(The network could agree to expand this number if it were ever necessary too)

Yes. You can charge 0.00000001 Bitcoins. (Although it would generally take a much larger fee than that to get timely transaction processing)

If more divisibility than this were ever required, this could be migrated to, provided the majority of network participants agreed. Increasing the divisibility this way would probably be uncontroversial if ever it were in such widespread use that it made sense - but other features such as the 21 Million limit would never get majority consensus to be changed.

Submission + - WordPress to accept bitcoins (computerworld.com.au)

angry tapir writes: "WordPress has said it will accept payment in bitcoins, opening up the blogging platform to payments from users in countries not supported by PayPal or credit card companies. WordPress is free, open-source software, but the company Automattic offers paid-for features such as blog designs, custom domains, hosting partnerships and anti-spam measures."

I mean.. so what?.. Let's just prepare for the case where we spend most of our time immersed in 3D CG environments. Optimize for that case and develop special goggles/implants to correct the strabismus for the rare occasion when we disconnect and want to take a peek at the naked 'real' world. Who *doesn't* want their view of the real world overlayed with location-aware ads and their gaggle of facebook/skype/tweet messages anyway?

Work on a test suite that exercises the code you already have. You'll discover new things about your code - and once you have a decent set of tests in place, you'll be able to dive in and refactor large chunks of code that you'd otherwise feel reluctant to touch. Once you've done that - write some tests for some new functionality your code should have. For some reason writing test cases has a slightly lower 'get started' barrier for me - and the rest flows.

Let all the other media outlets twist & sex up the story a bit first so that we don't have to deal with boring facts. Why look directly at what's going on on YouTube when we can wait for 2nd hand 'professional' media analysis hey? I think I don't need to say this.. but I'm new here.
