Honestly, I never even used the media server functionality. A while ago (before the 360 launch), my family invested in an actual home server (which also gets backed up to Carbonite) where we store all our music, videos, shared documents, et cetera. Since the PS3 is incompatible with our setup, we've never actually used the media server support (We don't even use it for Netflix or anything, just games). Instead we just have all our computers (4 laptops & 2 desktops) and phones (4 android phones) synced up with it. We even have it setup as a "web-server" so we can access it outside the home network.
Our home server is definitely one of the best things we've ever invested in. It is surprisingly low cost too; initial hardware + upgrades = ~$6,000; yearly cost (Carbonite and web stuff) = ~$100/yr.
