In ubuntu assuming you don't have many (any?) 3rd party repos upgrades are relatively smooth. Step 1) Edit /etc/update-manager and set Prompt=normal then a Step 2) sudo do-release-upgrade I updated my home file server this past weekend from 11.10 -> 12.10 without issue.
