Thank You, Senator Bedfellow

  • I'll see your senator and raise you Bin Laden. Yes folks, it seems that Bin Laden has broken from his ties to the Bush administration and is now actively campaigning against him. His tape, released today, is overflowing [powerlineblog.com] with the good Senator's talking points. Kerry has a very persuasive person hitting the campaign trail for him in Bin Laden.

Which aren't that far away from Markos' for that matter [shapeofdays.com].
    • I'll look more into it later, but might there not be a touch of 'reverse psychology' if this is legit?
      • I think the main point -- is the points. It is the philosophies endorsed more than the candidate itself.

As far as Bin Laden's thinking, I think this [nationalreview.com] probably sums it up...

I don't know that Bin Laden sees this helping one candidate or the other. He may see it as something of a win-win.

If Kerry wins, he sees the American people submitting to his desires. If Bush wins, it's another opportunity to recruit people and drum up support among the jihadists.

Indeed, this tape seems to be hedging for a victory by

    • Bin Laden? Who's he? Some Pakistani dude with a beard? You don't see Saddam Hussein spouting his mouth off on video tape, now do you? Goldurnit, Saddam's in jail. Bin Laden is free [topdog04.com]. Are you? [washingtonmonthly.com]

Any way, I think you're confusing Kerry's talking points on Bin Laden [reuters.com] with Michael Moore's.

      • Bin Laden is free.

About this time in the election season he set off bombs in Madrid. For us he just releases a video tape. I think that says far more about the situation than I could. In fact, he doesn't even promise any attacks in the tape, just general insecurity.

Perhaps he's just learning diplomacy fromt the UN.

        Goldurnit, Saddam's in jail.

Your distress at the situation is noted ;)

While I don't blame you for wanting to distance Kerry from Michael Moore, I think it is safe to say Kerry started co [newsmax.com]
    • Let's see... to use your own argument, OL, which you used when Iran endorsed Bush: reverse psychology anyone?

      • Let me hit this "reverse psycology" angle for a second. Looking at the good Iranian's endorsement, it practically pandered to vote for Bush so that they wouldn't be bugged by those dirty, nasty human rights. I wonder what gives me the impression that is an attempt at reverse psycology. But as was noted in the thread, it wasn't even that -- it was simply poorly reported.

But even taken for its word, contrast that with Bin Laden who endorsed neither candidate, but his words sound like another slanky tall pers [powerlineblog.com]
        • Yes, but what do you make of this? Surely Bin Laden is smart enough to realize that whatever position he takes, the American public will swing the other way in pure revulsion. Surely he is smart enough to realize that if Kerry's positions are associated with him, it undermines Kerry's credibility.

Surely he is smart enough to realize that just by appearing right before the election he is swinging things Bush's way, by reminding people of the terrorism issue, on which people have much more confidence in Bush

          • he is smart enough to realize that just by appearing right before the election he is swinging things Bush's way

Or does he know we know he's that smart and is counting on people wanting the necessary leadership change implied with such a blatant nose-thumbing?

Or, does he know we know he know, we know, and is hoping . . . !

          • Surely Bin Laden is smart enough to realize that whatever position he takes, the American public will swing the other way in pure revulsion.

Bin Laden is first and formost a rebel-leader. Whatever sows the most discord and distrust of leadership is where you will find him 100% of the time. His tape is brilliant in how it accomplishes this, attacking both Bush and Kerry (though Kerry is only given a passing reference). Mostly he is attacking establishment.

I don't know if you've seen "Delivered" (or in the
  • Bob Smith must be one of those united progressives [upforvictory.org] I keep hearing so much about. I like how the Kos gang can howl bloody murder [dailykos.com] when a Nader volunteer has a civil chat with a Republican student, but think it's great when Kerry gets the political support of a Republican arch-reactionary Senator.

Look, Smith is supporting Kerry mainly because he thinks Kerry will implement fiscal austerity measures (and not by cutting the defense budget, either). It's more proof that Kerry is going to betray all his liberal

    • Thank you. People like you keep the good people honest. I feel bad that I've been condesending. I'm just hoping that at least the poverty delta will be closer to Clinton's than and 2nd W term. Oh, and wind power, electric cars, and self-actualization for everyone, too, I hope.
