Aral Sea May Recover; Dead Sea Needs a Lifeline 131

An anonymous reader writes "It's a tale of two seas. The drying up of the Aral Sea is considered one of the greatest environmental catastrophes in history, but the northern sector of the sea, at least, is showing signs of life. A dam completed in 2005 has increased the North Aral's span by 20 percent, and birds, fish, and people are all returning to the area. Meanwhile, the Dead Sea is still in the midst of precipitous decline, since too much water is being drawn out of the Jordan River for thirsty populations and crops. To keep the sea from shrinking more, scientists are pushing an ambitious scheme called the 'Red-Dead conduit,' which would channel huge amounts of water from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea. However, the environmental consequences of such a project may be troubling."

There is an effort by Neo-Nazis to rebrand themselves and their ideology as "National Socialism." Several Wikipedia admins have been taking the side of these nutcases over at the Wikipedia article on Nazi Party member and noted philosopher Martin Heidegger (which is currently frozen.) A number of editors have insisted that Heidegger be referred to only as "National Socialist" and not as "Nazi."

Some of these Wikipedia admins don't even read the Talk Page. They just jump right in and take action.

The action of ignorant Wikipedia admins over at the Heidegger article made me realize that the world would be better off if there were no Wikipedia. I hope it goes the way of AOL and Computerland computer stores. And as far as Google giving Wikipedia $2M recently, SHAME ON GOOGLE!

Those who opposed any use of the term "Nazi" in the Heidegger article argued that it was pejorative, and that Heidegger was not a Nazi, he was a National Socialist.

A later commentator said that whether intentional or not, those who posted this drivel were attempting to rehabilitate the Nazis by arguing that they weren't Nazis at all, they were National Socialists. He mentioned Lithuania, where this process is farther along than it is here.

My hope would be that whether they read Wikipedia or not, people would not support projects like this one which place more power in the hands of Wikipedia admins. Such projects by definition place less power in the hands of ordinary Wikipedia users.

Hopefully companies like Google will also question whether Google is deserving of $2M contributions, especially when in terms of democratic process Wikipedia is getting worse instead of better, as admins go off on their power trips with more and more powerful tools.

Read the Wikipedia talk page for the Martin Heidegger article and you can see that parts of Wikipedia are infested with Neo-Nazi sympathizers who have the protection of a particular Wikipedia admin.

This project will place more power in the hands of anonymous, faceless Wikipedia bureaucrats. It is therefore harmful. If Wikipedia bureaucrats are too lazy to review possibly offensive material by hand and instead want a machine to do it for them then MAYBE the world does not need that kind of Wikipedia at all.
