There is already a board out there. Kionix, the same company that Apple used for the accelerometer, has a demo board (serial and USB) with a tri-axis accelerometer on it. Plug it in and get everything the new PB has. They have software with source code and a pretty good manual available for download.
Pretty cool stuff.
