Journal johndiii's Journal: Parenting 9

There are several new parents among my friends these days. Some of us have been trading parenting advice. This site (link warning: work-safe, but some "earthy" language) has an unorthodox but down-to-earth approach.

  • Interesting site.. thanks for the chuckle :) I suppose that is one approach I've never heard of!

By the way, how does McDonald's exploit the poor and weak people of Canada's rainforests anyway (I didn't know Canada had rainforests?)?? :P

    • Actually, I think that there is some terrain in British Columbia that could be called rainforest, due to the influence of the Gulf Stream. Perhaps someone with more geographic knowledge of that area could verify this.
      • This is off the topic but is an answer for one question.

Actually, there are rainforests as you can see here [rainforestweb.org]. It's really not that hard for find anything dealing with forest and the like, afterall, I am a true nature freak/jeeper'/rock crawler at heart. ;o)~

My Motto: Tread Lightly [treadlightly.org] & Rock Hard! Nothing like having true "Trail Etiquette" [207.202.209.188] while out there having fun. This is always a good way to not onl

Yep BC, Alaska, and Washington state all have coastal rainforests. Not due to the Gulf stream (thats in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic) but due to all of the weather and clouds that blow in from the Pacific.
        • Whoa, that's embarrassing. I really do know the location of the Gulf Stream. Honest. But I thought that there is a similar current that runs across the Pacific. Current maps found by googling don't seem to support this, though.
  • The images are brilliant, but they do remind me of the English artist Banksy [banksy.co.uk] who, among other things, makes extensive use of stencils to propagate his message. Since most people are probably in need of a message it can't hurt to have more people use ugly walls in this way.

    • Yes, there are some similarities. The page where I got the Guerilla Parenting link also had a link to Banksy, though I didn't look at his site until I saw your message. I'd be interested to know who first thought of this kind of thing. For some reason, National Lampoon comes to mind, but I'm not sure that they ever did something like this. When I have time, perhaps a Google search on "stencil art", but that would probably return thousands of crafts pages.

That leads to an interesting question: What will art historians make of the internet in future times. Archive.org notwithstanding neither page probably will be there in ten years. Maybe they will have to quote this very discussion. I don't know who came first. Obviously stencils are anything but a new idea. Using them for urban improvement purposes is a rather fresh approach, though. Since they are usually illegal, the various city councils will have the most accurate records.
