Journal johndiii's Journal: Odd "Funny" Moderations 14

The last three or four days, in metamoderation, I've been seeing some moderations of "Funny" which should be "Interesting", "Insightful", or "Informative". In general, I metamod based on whether or not I think the comment deserved some kind of positive score. "Funny" gets a fair amount of leeway; the comment needs to have at least a little redeeming humor value. "Redundant" is generally unfair unless the comment adds nothing to the discussion and is more than five or ten minutes after the post(s) to which it is considered redundant. "Troll" or "Flamebait" need to be pretty obvious; again, the test is whether or not they contribute anything to the discussion. "Offtopic" must be offtopic both for the discussion as a whole, and for its parent thread.

Anyway, I'm a bit torn as to how I should M2 this "Funny" moderation. The post is, in fact, not funny. It is definitely informative, however. Is the moderation unfair because it promotes the post, but deprives the poster of the karma increase that he deserves for making a positive contribution to the discussion?

This is a bit of Slashdot navel-gazing, but I think that the moderation system needs some discussion.

Odd "Funny" Moderations

  • You think the moderation needs some discussion?

    You're kidding.

  • Send us the link. If 20% of us laugh it is funny and may be 80% interesting too :-)

Anyway, somewhere in the guidelines this is mentioned. Funny is positive moderation, so if it is a positive post it should stand.
    • OK, here [slashdot.org] you go. Not much funny about it, as far as I can see.
      • Well, this part Senator Hatch is, overall, a great guy. is pretty funny to me!

Ain't so bad. I vote that "funny" is funny.
        • Well, one could say that it was sad, rather than funny, but I get your point.

Ironically, I didn't get to metamod that post because I left the window open to think about it, and then accidentally closed it.
      • Perhaps the moderator accidentally hit funny when he meant something else. He could have even scrolled down the page and inadvertently changed his selection. Assuming this to be the case the moderation should be M2ed unfair.
        • Yes, that's quite possible. Particularly if he or she was using a mouse with a scroll wheel. I've often inadvertently changed a moderation by using the scroll wheel when the focus was still on the list box. I think that I always catch it, though.
  • Also, I read in Surak's Journal [slashdot.org] that funny mods don't give you karma any more. So if something is more informative, people should really being marking it as such.
  • As worded, it's a specific type of troll - it's literally an attractor for flames.

But, most people take it to be an abusive comment, which should be worded as just "flame". That's my personal gripe about moderation. Taco doesn't seem interested in changing the wording though.
    • Why even bother with trying to label all the types of moderation that a comment can have? Comments should be rated in a positive or negative fashion (like perlmonks.org). You avoid all of the discrepancies and avoid âoegroup thinkâ among the moderators.
  • If you want to metamod something as unfunny because you think it should have been moderated as informative, then just do it. Metamodding something in a negative way does not punish the original poster, it only punishes the moderator. That's what you want. Right? It's not like your metamoderation is going to actually effect the comment's moderation score.

Just do it :-). 85% of the time I metamod "funny" comments as unfunny. Most "funny" comments should have been moderated as "funny if you are 8 years

    • Most "funny" comments should have been moderated as "funny if you are 8 years old"

OK, there's a comment that's definitely insightful. :-) I tend to metamod "Funny" fairly leniently - perhaps from that 8-year-old's perspective. The main reason behind the entry was that I've seen more of these moderations ("funny" mods on serious posts) recently, and I was wondering of others had noticed, and what they thought about the moderation. Whether I punish a moderator for modding an insightful comment up as "F
