Journal johndiii's Journal: Excess Computers? 2

Excess Computers?

  • I will paraphrase my ex-girlfriend on this one. She used to say "A girl always needs a new pair of black schoes".
I am tempted to say: "A geek always needs another old computer". I still have 4 carcasses lying around which I hope to convert in usable machines. I mean, an extra fileserver/SQL server never hurts... I am the one that picks up P-I and P-II machines for 25Euro a piece, and yes, I use then.
  • Universities usually have surplus auctions and public stores with cheap computers. 501(c)3 nonprofits can usually get in and buy stuff that would be auctioned off later, and maybe a markdown in price.

Check out accrc [accrc.org] and freegeek [freegeek.org] for existing non-profits that take old computers and properly dispose or refurbish them, and evangelize free software as well.
