Journal johndiii's Journal: J. M. W. Turner Exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art 2

The Dallas Museum of Art is hosting a major exhibit of the art of J. M. W. Turner, the quintessential English artist. This is the largest and most comprehensive exhibit of his work that has even been assembled in the United States. It started at the National Gallery in Washington, DC, and will be at the DMA through mid-May. After that, it travels to the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.

Turner is most often thought of as a landscape artist, but that assessment misses the depth and significance of his work. Even in his early work, his genius with the use and depiction of light is evident. As time went on, he clearly foreshadowed the Impressionists and even some of the more abstract trends of the twentieth century. If you have any chance at all, I recommend that you see this exhibition. This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

In addition to the exhibit itself, a number of lectures and other events have been organized. There is more information about these at the link above. I went to a lecture and a poetry reading on Friday night, and caught a repeat of the poetry reading on Saturday. I will be taking in some of the other things as time permits. It should be an interesting couple of months. :-)
