I was a VM Systems Programmer in the early 1990s. We had one IBM mainframe that was shared with MVS. We used VM/CMS for, among other things, providing Email and calendaring for the organization. This was before Exchange/Notes/etc. We used PROFS and then OfficeVision. We had about 8,000 users total, of which, about 2,000 would be logged in and active at any one time. Most users got sub-second response time. I was the only admin needed to support that application, and it was only one of several that I supported.
I sometimes think of the above while staring and the spinning ball while I wait for my Mac to respond...
I still have yet to find any programming language that's more fun to program in than REXX, especially when coupled with CMS Pipes.
