Scrum doesn't turn into a Death March. If it does then you ScrumMaster needs his head examined. I personally try to avoid any job where my boss is an idiot.
The basic purpose for my team using Scrum is to keep focused and be able to work towards a single goal.
The daily scrum meeting helps to coordinate the group and help each other out if there are problems. And we can find out in that meeting if someone is off track on the project or had a better method to do something.
We stick to our 40 hours and do the best we can in the time given to a project.
The best part of Scrum is that we have a someone that can stop outside distractions and let me do my job. That is what the ScrumMaster does the best. If someone wants to change something or pull me off to do something else, I can defer it to the ScrumMaster. A single point of focus to keep the team on the right project and outside distractions to a minimum. The ham and eggs analogy is great to explain this idea.
And daily sprints do not mean I cannot work on a piece of the project more then one day. I just have a daily focus and work to reach a conclusion.
Testing is part of any good development and I never understood why you had to spell it out in the methodology anyways. overkill in my opinion
I really don't care what you call the idea of Agile Development or claiming to use the latest and greatest XP or Scrum. But I have about a fourth the worthless paperwork and meaningless meetings with a simple focus because we use Scrum. And that lets me do my job and actually create something with a focus and be able to adjust each 30 days to deliver the correct product. The funny thing is I don't think a single manager knows that we actually use Scrum but we are far more effective for doing it.
And if you were looking to match it to XP then you could match even the waterfall method. And didn't an earlier post mention that Scrum was developed about 6 years before XP so which is a breakoff. My guess would be XP.
