Comment Speculation about the future is overrated (Score 1) 254

I have to admit that I find speculation about radically advanced technology to be boring and sort of irrelevant to the myriad human issues that actually concern us here and now. But I also feel like the best science fiction is in fact about taking the here-and-now and pursuing it to a logical extreme. E.g. cyberpunk works because it's about the commodification of everything, including politics, your identity, and your body. In other words, good science fiction is like good fiction in general: it's about real social issues and real human problems.

Submission + - Tech-related volunteer gigs 1

jeffomatic writes: Here's a question for Service Day: what kind of volunteer opportunities are available out there for the technologically-inclined? I'm a software developer and I'm wondering if there's anyone in the field engaged in pro-bono work, like IT or teaching or web design or whatnot. I'm not at all above rolling my sleeves up and working at shelters or the local park, but it occurs to me that my professional skills might be usefully applied in the service context as well. I'd like to hear about what other people are doing, in terms of projects, time commitments, organizations, etc.

The trouble with being punctual is that people think you have nothing more important to do.
