Comment Status-6 "Kanyon" (Score 2) 175

This is why the Russians developed the Status-6 system. Eventually the US will work out how to shoot down warheads so they designed a nuclear powered and armed torpedo system that cruises quietly into a port and then detonates its warhead.

I don't know where the Chinese are up to in regard to hypersonic *maneuvering* warheads but the Russians are certainly all over it.

The takeaway is that no one's giving up their advantage. The US works out how to block one threat, the other guys work out a way to go around it.

Comment Re:How do they know who it was? (Score 1) 177

Thing is of course that everyone is hacking everyone else at the moment, it isn't just people trying to hack the US elections. And what's the end game for Russia here if it is them? They're hacking Biden's campaign to, what, get a better sanction deal from Trump? Don't think so. Likewise the Chinese, they want trade back so they're not going to hurt Biden's campaign because he's advised by semi-rational people who would probably drop the trade war so... Cui bono?, in English "to whom is it a benefit?" Plus, let's not forget the Vault7 leak and the info that the CIA (FiveEyes) gear can leave fingerprints that suggest the hack was committed by other actors, etc.

Morrison's (Scumo) conservative government HAS NOT DONE a good job and I don't know why people think it has. From the start of the COVID19 crisis, his government has been pushing the same herd immunity approach as the UK and the US, both unqualified disasters. If it hadn't been for the State Premiers in NSW and VIC (State Governors) essentially ignoring the national leader and instituting the closing down of schools, shops and restaurants and pushing for other distancing measures in their own states, Australia would look pretty much identical to the UK and US at the moment. Scomo, early on in the crisis when everyone was deciding if to close down or not and in response to questions about the VIC state premier closing down his state, he said he was "disappointed" and that he was off to the football on the weekend with 20 or 30 thousand other people. Then the premier of that state realized that Scomo was a fucking idiot and shut down everything like her Victorian counterpart. So the footy was off anyway. PM "Scomo" was roundly described as a dickhead at that point. On the economic side, yeah the conservative government fucked up there as well. They've introduced programs to get support to people out of work but it flows through their former employers so its a mess so far. Casual workers and people working here on temporary visas get nothing. This is over a million people left high and dry at last count. On top of that they refuse to reconsider these provisions to include these people even though they could literally change them with the stroke of a pen. They really are a complete pack of cunts. The good press he's getting at the moment seems to stem solely from the deeply flawed "JobKeeper" program described above. Once people realise what a fuck up that is, you might see the tone of these stories change.

Comment Re:Have you seen the movie, it's good (Score 1) 271

I thought the movie was good too but I do have to say, we've seen it all before. The plot is basically a rerun of all the earlier movies with minor variations and this time an all female cast. I'm just hoping that the poor box office showing is a result of the (fairly) tired plot and not just the general apparent misogyny of movie audiences in the US. The new terminators are excellent, but I couldn't help but feel I was watching a toned down version of the film as all the emotional gut punches (family members being murdered and duplicated) were left off screen which sort of hollowed out any horror the audience might experience as a result and I think drained some of the films potential emotional core. Can't remember who directed it and will really be surprised if it was Cameron. He was a producer though I noticed, one of about thirty it seemed. I'd give it a 7.

...workers in developed nations can't match wages of people desperate for work in third-world countries, factories get moved to third-world countries. Laid-off workers desperate for work are willing to take a lower paid job just to keep the money coming in. Rinse and repeat. Pretty soon no one is talking about a wage rise given how bleak the jobs market is. People stop spending money, the economy starts to tank. Governments freak, lower interest rates to encourage investment and offer tax cuts to companies. Companies aren't interested in investing because there not selling more so they use the tax cuts to buy back stock. Stock price increases, indexes go up but inflation stays super low and wage growth is nowhere. Globalization.
