Comment Optimistic or stupid? (Score 3, Interesting) 43

Are they just optimistic that their product provides enough value that they can justify charging almost $250/year? Or have they simply not learned a single damn thing from the last 30 years of their existence? Chrome has Gemini integrated whether you like it or not, and for free. Pin a ChatGPT tab and boom, saved you $20/month.

My hatred was already maxed out for the null/empty-string screwup.

It has been so long since I've been bitten by that particular "feature", I forgot about it entirely. Now that I remember: DAMN THEM. GOD DAMN THEM.

Gears of War 2 Patched To Fix Matchmaking Issues, Problems Persist 34

When Gears of War 2 was released, one of the biggest complaints about the game was that its matchmaking system didn't work properly for multi-player games, leading to unreasonably long wait times. After trying to placate players with mostly useless suggestions, Epic finally released a patch to address the matchmaking issues. Unfortunately, now that players have had a chance to try it out, it seems a large segment of the Gears 2 population is still having problems.

Red Flag Linux Forced On Chinese Internet Cafes 295

iamhigh writes "Reports are popping up that Chinese Internet Cafes are being required to switch to Red Flag Linux. Red Flag is China's biggest Linux distro and recently received headlines for their Olympic Edition release. The regulations, effective Nov. 5th, are aimed at combating piracy and require only that cafes install either a legal version of Windows or Red Flag. However, Radio Free Asia says that cafes are being forced to install Red Flag even if they have legal versions of Windows. Obviously questions about spying and surveillance have arisen, with no comment from the Chinese Government."

Not really a fair comparison since the Dune books were always rooted in our history and present and far enough in the distance to allow Herbert room to explore. Furthermore, there were few truly made-up words in the novels. Most of the words had solid roots in our current lexicon (maybe not English but they exist) and mangled enough to where it is somewhat believable as language and culture would evolve 10,000 years into the future. Even totally foreign concepts had simple terms attached to them and with a few exceptions to be sure... but there was very little pure BS to be had in those novels.

National ID Cards Mandated in the US, If You're Under 50 869

charleste writes "CNN is reporting that the US Homeland Security Department has mandated Real ID for drivers licenses. According to the article, this will not include a 'chip', but a list of options by state. Despite legislation passed in various states and objections by groups such as ACLU, this appears to be a done deal. Without one of the new IDs you will be unable to board a plane after 2014 if you are under 50."
