The community college where I teach has courses in physics, chemistry, biology, math, English, history, economics, and many other academic areas. Most of the courses in these areas are college-level, with credit for them transferring to four-year colleges. I’d say about 3/4 of our courses are in academic areas rather than vocational. We *also* have some vocational programs (paralegal, translator/interpreter, nursing, auto tech, etc.), but those aren’t our primary enrollment. Most students are taking the foundation courses here at a lower cost and transferring to four-year schools later.

Honestly, I am not sure how you got from my question about the efficacy of plastic shields vs. cloth masks to the questions you are asking. I am also not clear on why it is useful to take a position that you admit is “being ridiculous.” (Then again, it’s late at night here and it’s entirely possible I may not have given your argument the depth of analysis it deserves.)

Community College instructor here. I'm surprised by the $800 per class. In California, our classes are $46/semester unit, so a typical class (3-4 units) is $200 per class max. This makes textbooks even more dramatically overpriced relative to the tuition. I try to make sure that books never cost more than the class itself. Such books are out there, but it takes some searching. Our school website lists courses with zero-cost textbooks.

It can't be done without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress. If one were to get the consent of the California legislature (the state involved) and the Congress, it would be possible. The probability would be extremely small, but it would absolutely be possible.
