Why Developers Are Switching To Macs 771

snydeq writes "Programmers are finding themselves increasingly drawn to the Mac as a development platform, in large part due to Apple's decision to move to Intel chips and to embrace virtualization of other OSes, which has turned Mac OS X into a flexible tool for development, InfoWorld reports. The explosion of interest in smartphone development is helping the trend, with iPhone development lock-in to the Mac environment the chief motivating factor for Apple as a platform of choice for mobile development. Yet for many, the Mac remains sluggish and poorly tuned for development, with developers citing its virtual memory system's poor performance in paging data in and out of memory and likening use of the default-network file system, AFS, to engaging oneself with 'some kind of passive-aggressive torture.' What remains unclear is whether Apple will lend an ear to this new wave of Mac-based development or continue to develop products that lock out uses programmers expect."

Feed Science Daily: Clever Plants 'Chat' Over Their Own Network (sciencedaily.com)

Recent research reveals that plants have their own 'chat' systems that they can use to warn each other. Therefore plants are not boring and passive organisms that just stand there waiting to be cut off or eaten up. Many plants form internal communications networks and are able to exchange information efficiently.

Feed Science Daily: Mutation Of The COX2 Gene Can Double Or Triple A Woman's Risk Of Ovarian Cancer (sciencedaily.com)

Researchers have discovered that a specific mutation of the COX2 gene seems to play a role in the onset of ovarian cancer, increasing women's susceptibility to developing the disease. The discovery raises the possibility that it might be possible to use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, which are used already for other conditions, to prevent ovarian cancer developing in women with the COX2 mutation.

Feed Science Daily: Fluid Theory Confirmed By Foton (sciencedaily.com)

In scientific research, there is great satisfaction when theoretical work is eventually supported by experimentation. Such was the case for a team of Italian and US scientists when they received preliminary confirmation of a 10-year-old theory from a fluid science experiment that is currently orbiting the Earth on the Foton-M3 spacecraft.

Feed Engadget: Sony's new NR-series laptops get a price, release date (engadget.com)

Those shiny new VAIO NRs we told you about a couple of weeks ago have gotten the US nod and a price tag, and we thought we'd share the good news. The model, which Sony is referring to as "entry-level," touts a 15.4-inch, XBRITE-ECO display, a Core 2 Duo CPU, and all the regular bells and whistles, like 802.11a/b/g, DVD-RW, and an ExpressCard slot. The new laptop comes in a "fabric-like" casing, is available in three "stylish" colors (wenge, silk, and granite), and will be selling next month for the surprisingly low price (at least for Sony) of $750.

Feed Engadget: Toshiba intros WiFi-less Gigabeat T400 (engadget.com)

Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video

While there's still no official word of a North American release of Toshiba's WiFi-packin' Gigabeat T401, it looks like those round these parts can now get their hands on its slightly less-capable counterpart: the WiFi-less Gigabeat T400. Apart from the lack of WiFi, this one looks to be identical to the T401, with it packing 4GB of NAND flash memory, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, and support for WMV video, along with MP3, WMA, WAV and WMA Lossless audio. According to Toshiba, you can also expect about 16 hours of audio playback and 5 hours of video playback from the player's rechargeable battery. It also looks like Toshiba's decided to tone down the color options from the Japanese release, with the player now only available with your choice of blue, pink, or orange trims, each of which will set you back $120.
