Journal jawtheshark's Journal: Subscription 22
Finally slashdot implemented the subscription by credit-card. I'm not that fond of paying subscriptions on the internet, however Slashdot has given me a lot: enterainment and education about the Open Source world which I didn't know at all before.
The fact that you now can pay the subscription by credit card is very important to me because PayPal is American only. So how could I contribute, even if I wanted?
I shelled out 20$, and this should do for a year, I hope. I've never been too cheap to support what I think is worthy to be supported (I donated for OpenBSD for example). The ads didn't bother me, so it's not really a issue. It's just about being thankfull that Slashdot exists.
Thank you for your time (even though I doubt many people read my journal *grin*)

I identify with what you write. I don't like going out either. I always thought my Saturday evenings will be much better after I get a driving license, but no. I've tried doing many things on Saturday evening: Cafes, pubs, bowling, disco, billiard, you name it. But it was never fun - I enjoyed only when I went to a good movie.
The things that bugs me most are the cigarette smoke and the noise.. I wish someone opens a smoke-free, normal-volume pub here. I like disco dancing (although I'm not too good with it yet), but it's hard to enjoy it when I know that my ears are getting destroyed and my lungs absorb cancer smoke. That's why private parties may be better.

I guess we both are the typical geeks with a bit of problems in crowed places. Yesterday again I went out, and after a while I just started to get pissed. Besides I was very cold and tired, but I had to bring Jenny home, so I cound't go without spoiling her fun. Actually my previous post was when I came home and started to reinstall a computer (for a friend) gulping down some beers..at 3:30 in the morning. It was at that point that I felt good.
I can relate to your comment about the driving license. I thought exactly the same. You know when I was young, I didn't want my parents to bother to bring me to parties and other social events. So I never went out and I still am convinced that it is something you learn at an early age.
However the day I had my driving license (and my own car later on), nothing changed at all. Note that I like driving, I love cars, I even have a kick-ass car [audi-tt.com] and everyone sais it is a chick-magnet. Yeah, sure...but unfortunately the guy who is driving it seems to count too.
About smoking: I smoke myself...I started at 19 because I missed the smoke from my dad's cigarettes when I was at university. Mostly it was not more than a few cigars a week, but lately it started getting out of hand. I stopped yesterday,...so this is my second day smokeless. It feels quite good.
And you are right, we need a smoke-free normal volume pub. Though I fear that there is no big market for it. The smoke-free you can forget in Europe at least.
This of course indicates that I'm not in New York. It was a reference to the song from "Sting". I meant something like "I feel misplaced here".

Anyway, I have no problem with masses of people. I actually feel more warm when I have a lot of people around me.. like in the library, or around a big dance floor. I feel less safe in a small group of people (unless they are all from my closed family).
Now, have you ever been in California? It's supposed to be illegal to smoke almost everywhere in there, but I've been in one pub in Hollywood (it was near the hotel.. it's a pity I didn't check more pubs) and people had no problem smoking there. Anyway, I don't think I'll ever visit there again.. LA is so boring. San Fransisco may be interesting, but not enough for flying so far.
