I've been reading that they are looking at more "interesting" people now, not just "best coders" and 4.0 GPA, etc.

Don't put yourself down. They're a desireable company to work for, with no shortage of potential employees clamouring at their doors. You've got this far based on merit, rather than because of any lowered standards they may have. Good luck with progressing further...

I expect that Google is looking for technical proficiency. From the stuff I've read here, it makes sense that you would make it past the first round of interviews.
