Journal jawtheshark's Journal: GeForce 6600 -- Very odd 4

I took the graphics card, stuck it in a old AGP motherboard I have (featuring a Pentium MMX 233MHz). Didn't work at first. Then I plugged in the power connector on the card. Boots up like a charm.

So the card is not defective :-/
It still is not clear whether it's my motherboard or the powersupply. :-/

  • Looks like there's lots of problems with this combination.

  • agp slots have a lot of variations at a lot of voltages... older (or cheaper) motherboards don't supply the correct amount of voltage because they were designed when gpus used as much power as a hd, not as much power as a main cpu... hense the little power add-on on the card. which enables it to work and function properly on an earlier design agp slot, without the little power add-in they would have had to make the card so as that it would be impossible to insert into the older style slot.

    • I understand that... The thing is, the motherboard that worked is older and a no-name brand (at least, I don't see any reference to a brand). The motherboard that didn't work is a Tyan (which is actually a pretty reputable brand for SMP machines) and it's "only" three years old.

The power supply in my dual machine is a 530W Antec and the power supply I used with the P233MMX motherboard was a cheap ass power supply from Sweex. It rates over 600W [sweex.nl], but I don't really trust it. (Came out of my server, I got
