Journal jawtheshark's Journal: Fucking debit card! 8

Today SmilingGirl went out to try her wedding dress. Yeah, I know: I'm not supposed to be there to see. For simplicity we decided to buy my suit in the same shop so, I got to see her in her wedding dress. Absolutely gorgeous. It was a bit tight, she gained a few kilos, so she's on a diet again (*sigh*).

Anyways, suits are easy. Just pick out the model, take sizes, the tissue and that's it. Come back in a few weeks and it's done. (Eventually make adaptations I guess) Over 1000€ (don't even dare to ask the price of the dress!), no problem... but preferably not on my VISA because I need it to pay my new printer. So I took out my new debet card that I got last week. I'm fucking sure that the PIN was 2124. Come on... such a pin can't be forgotten by a computer scientist: it says "take the powers of 2" (first number) and then you actually do the formula 2^0, 2^1, 2^3. I'm fucking sure it's the number. There is no way to check because I destroyed the original pincode as you are supposed to do. That pincode was refused twice, so I tried my old one which was refused too. Out of pure fury I destroyed my debet card. I paid with my VISA, but still... That VISA expires in a month and from then on I need a code for that one too. So tomorrow, I need to go to the bank and ask a for a new debet card, and get my new VISA. They can pry my old VISA out of my cold death hands before I know for sure that my new one works.

I hate pin-code changes.... I'm fucking sure I learnt the right one by heart. Fucking card... Damn... I still wonder how I'm going to explain that broken debet card to my bank ;-)

Fucking debit card!

  • The correct pin would be 2148...

But since you've destroyed the card, it's of no use to me... :)
  • Don't bother to explain it to your bank. Don't even bother to show them that it's destroyed. Simply walk into a local branch of your bank and tell them your card met a nasty demise and that you need a new one. They'll assume incompetence or something but won't bother to ask. Soon you'll have a new card. Easy.

Well, that's what I did after my old wallet decided to eat my debit card. They didn't care in the least, and for a crappy bank, they got me a new card pretty quickly. As for not remembering the pin, doe

    • I'll probably not bother to explain. It's just funny, because I got my new debet card exactly last week. They can think of me what they want, but I really felt so stupid in that shop for not knowing my own pin.

As for not remembering the pin, does the card not function like a credit card as well? I know every debit card from a major bank I've heard of in the states does, so I don't need to know my pin except to pull money out of an ATM.

I can't tell for the rest of Europe, but if you use your debet ca

      • They've just started bringing in chip&pin in the UK over the past 6 months or so for both debit and credit cards - up until now we have only used signatures. We've been told that it's for added security - supposedly it is much harder for a thief to watch you type in your number than for them to forge your signature. Of course, this doesn't affect online or telephone purchases in the slightest.

One interesting thing to note is that they have changed the liability for fraudulent purchases - previously if

        • Now if someone steals your card and uses your pin, they assume that you didn't look after the number and you are held liable. Not quite the leap forward they make it out to be.

Why am I not surprised? Well, they'll have a whole bunch of guys like me that forget their codes all the time. Making those cards isn't free you know ;-)

  • I've got two debet/credit cards and once I managed to forget both PIN codes. I walked over to an ATM, inserted the first card and realized that I had no recollection of what the PIN code was. Cancel operation, take out the first card and insert the second one. The same thing.

Oh, and the numbers never came back to me. I was living abroad at the time and my bank had to FedEx the new PIN codes (and IIRC, new cards as well) to me. Now I've got the numbers stored on my cell phone in an obfuscated format.

  • I remember PIN codes I had 15+ years ago. I also remember lots of passwords à la ge6JY#3d (just made that up and therefore won't remember it) for years and years. That being said, my short term memory is getting suckier and suckier...

btw - SmilingGirl should try running. I've been running a lot since I got my cool new running shoes, and while I haven't lost a damn gram, my clothes are fitting a lot better :-)

The rule on staying alive as a program manager is to give 'em a number or give 'em a date, but never give 'em both at once.
