That is absurd. Lets charge people who drive more on the road more tax for there vehicle tags. From now on people must display there odometer so the damn fed can verify how much they drive. Be sure to sign up for the new gps receiver so "big brother" can tell where you've been too. While it is true that the phone company offers standard "POTS" lines at a loss they are subsidized by all the features they sell with the line. 99% of the features that Bell South offers with there lines ie call waiting, call waiting deluxe, call forwarding, call waiting, *69, etc carry a one time charge for Bell South. You want to know how much take a look at there unbundled prices here is Alabama's http://www.psc.state.al.us/ check out "Bellsouth's UNE pricing Order" --.55 cents is what bellsouth charges wholesale. Now what happens if this passes what happens to those isps who aren't telcos. What about Bellsouth.net, GTE.net seems like they would have an unfair advantage. I seem to remember bellsouth for one pushing for you to get a second line, and now they are bitching that they have to upgrade there switches, blah, blah, blah. I don't want to here there crap stories. If they would bring xDSL services to my area I would gladly jump ship, Hell I would even settle for a cable modem, but the fact is that it will probably be 2-3 years before my area sees either. I've been and isdn user in my state for 2.5 years and I love it. I had to fight to keep my unlimited status when I moved because AL has now gone to a metered plan. Unlimited in my state is now 250.00 per month. What supposed justification for this price hike? "We have experienced heavy usage in other states and anticipate internet users in AL to saturate the circuits also. We installed more equipment to handle the increase in usage and now have to pay for it" so they payed--i mean pleaded with the Alabama Public Service Commission to allow them to charge "actual cost" however there wholesale price from there UNE is around 50.00 so why the 250.00? Go figure. Fact of the matter is Telco's overcharge as it is we certainly don't need to allow them to get even more money and your $$ you pay to them is more than sufficient to pay for the services they offer. Think about it for every call you make to an isp the telco gets 2 lines. They don't just make money off your 24.00 a month line but they get the isps money too. what does a digital line cost for a business in AL about 50.00 so it seems they just made a few bucks.
