We all have opinions on this and it's great to read them all.
To say that it is "unconstitutional" to censor content in the public library system is to presume that the library system is actually an entitlement. This is not true. Nowhere in our constitution does it guarantee that our government will provide library services to it's citizens. This is a pure privilege to be appreciated as such.
Also.. I agree that many of the filters out today block some valid content. But let's get back to the primary issue: The intention is to block pornography! Just because there may not be any filters currently that effectively block pornography WITHOUT blocking valid content does not mean that it is not possible to develop such a system. So let's not rule filters out altogether. Let's work on building a more effective filter.
Secondly, considering the fact that the library is a "privilege" and not a "right", then we as a society need to decide what's more important. Can we accept blocking 98% access to porn for our children at the expense of blocking 5% of valid content to the rest of us? What numbers do we decide are acceptable? No system is perfect.
I live in Fairfax County Virginia. We have one of the most advanced library systems in the country. I have been in the library 8 times in the past 12 months. On at least 3 or 4 occassions I have seen boys between the age of 13 and 18 viewing pornography on the computer. The computers are in the center of the main floor and are viewable to anyone walking by. It is not unreasonable for a parent in Fairfax county to demand better from it's library system... otherwise they might as well start carrying Playboy in the magazine area.
Just my opinion.. don't have a heart-attack.
